Jaclyn Hill is In A Hairy Situation - I'm Mad

With all the horrific things going on in our world (and there are a ton of horrific things going on in our world), it seems silly to be focused on what is now being referred to as #lipstickgate. Still, as both a makeup artist/addict and as a publicist, my mind is absolutely boggled by what has happened and how Jaclyn Hill is handling it.

Who is Jaclyn Hill, you ask? (assuming you don't watch hours of Youtube beauty influencers like me). Although, let's be honest, Jaclyn pretty much only posts a video these days if she has something to sell. I discovered Jaclyn Hill while I was in makeup school. Everyday, we did a makeup look on one of our classmates and our teacher would critique it. No pressure or anything. I definitely relied heavily on Youtube tutorials for extra techniques and inspiration. Jaclyn is beautiful, vibrant and in her early days she really taught her subscribers how to apply makeup. So because of that, I've continued to support her in spite of all the red flags (and there have been many red flags).

Pretty much all of her collaborations with brands have been shady AF. First, there was her Becca eyeshadow palettes. When customers complained about poor quality, Jaclyn was very quick to take zero responsibility and throw Becca under the bus. She was only responsible for ONE shade in the palette. Becca used a different factory without her knowledge. The samples she tried were perfect. The eyeshadow palettes were recalled, Becca lost tons of money and Jaclyn went on buying Birkin bags.

Then came her first eyeshadow palette with Morphe. Morphe is Jaclyn's favorite brand to collaborate with because she makes a LOT of money with them. More money than with any other brand. So much money, that she's screwed over other brands so she could just collab with Morphe instead. Morphe doesn't have the best quality products. They also have pretty lousy customer service. I've pretty much liked 1% (this is Jaclyn's favorite percentage) of all the Morphe products that I've tried. Having said that, I did like her original palette with Morphe. I did not like that she upgraded the packaging shortly after hearing critiques so that everyone who rushed to grab the palette was left with the original and fairly shitty packaging. Still, it was overall her least problematic launch and the palette is really good.

Then came the Vault. The Vault, in a nutshell, was all of the amazing shades that didn't make it into her original palette. In other words, the leftovers (or a way for them to continue to capitalize on this collection). Jaclyn assured all of her subscribers that it was the same incredible formula as her original palette.

Spoiler alert: It was NOT

After receiving some negative reviews, Morphe recalled the palettes. In an alarmingly short amount of time, "new" palettes were made. Jaclyn let us all know the original palettes were "destroyed." She would later clarify that the palettes were not actually destroyed. Per usual, she was given "false information".  The new palettes were not better than the old palettes. Many people speculate that these palettes were not actually new at all. I bought a couple palettes from the Vault collection and let me tell you...they were terrible. I didn't even want to give them to friends and returning was such a hassle (have I mentioned Morphe's customer service sucks?) I threw them in the trash. As a certified makeup artist, I can make most eyeshadows work. There were patchy, did not blend, the shimmers had no pigment. Still, it wasn't Jaclyn's fault because it's never Jaclyn's fault. It was Morphe's fault. To this day, Jaclyn continues to use and recommend the vault palettes.

Note: This is a photo of Makeup Shayla. Her channel is awesome.

It's also important to note that Jaclyn has been caught in many lies. Her lies are fairly dumb (like she will say she's afraid of flying so she can't do a meet and greet that requires her to fly, but then talk will about the luxurious  vacation she is planning, which requires her to fly). So while she's not lying in the incredibly alarming and life altering way that say our President lies, she does lie. Still, it's easy to forgive her because she always comes off as really caring and genuine on camera. She's recently been through a divorce. She suffers from anxiety. There's always something going on in her personal life that she will bring up to make us feel sorry for her and forgive her. And many of us have. So she continued to live her best life and buy Birkin bags.

Jaclyn finally launched her own brand of cosmetics. I say "finally," because she's been talking about it and teasing it for YEARS. Literally, like five years. Say what you want about Jaclyn Hill, but her makeup always looks great and many of us had high hopes for brand. As a self proclaimed perfectionist, there was no way anything could go wrong with HER brand. The brand she's been working on for five years. Additionally, if something did happen to go wrong, this would be the first time she'd have no one else to blame but herself.

Jaclyn launched 20 nude lipsticks. I love nude lipsticks. I, along with many fans and influencers alike, rushed to get our hands on these rich, luxe, buttery lipsticks. They sold out incredibly quickly. One strange thing was that no influencers had received PR packages. Generally, influencers receive products in PR prior to a launch. This is so they can review the products and their subscribers will know whether or not they should purchase based on the trusted opinion of their favorite beauty guru. Not one influencer received PR prior to this launch. Jaclyn would go on to say it was a mistake in shipping, she was so upset, blah blah blah. In the words of one of my very favorite beauty guru's Bailey Sarian (who also talks about true crime while doing her makeup and is my spirit animal) this is very SUSPICH.

People seemed to like the lipsticks at first, but then one unfortunate soul named Veronica posted a picture of her lipstick, which has weird bumps and hairs. She tagged Jaclyn Hill, who basically told her that it was most likely Veronica's dry lips that caused this because it certainly was not her lipsticks. But then more people started finding horrific things in their lipsticks. Holes, moisture spots, glass/plastic, hairs in all shapes, colors and sizes! One of my fave beauty Youtubers Raw Beauty Kristi examined her lipsticks under a microscope and it was not pretty. Not pretty at all.

This picture is from Rawbeauty Kristi and the link to her amazing video is below.

WTF? Also, ahhhhhh

Jaclyn made a statement that the hairs (or fibers if you will, but really hairs) came from new white gloves that her lab used without her knowledge. They instantly switched back to latex gloves so this would never happen again. Trusted brand owners who are familiar with makeup labs such as Makeup Geek founder Marlena Stell and Emmy award winning makeup artist Kevin James Bennett, would later say that this is not possible, no lab would do this and even if they did, was some lab worker just running his hands all over the thousands of tubes of open lipsticks?

What Jaclyn Hill should have done is immediately recalled these lipsticks. She should have gone on camera and said she was horrified by this situation, that no one should use these lipsticks until they had solid answers and that her company would be issuing full refunds.

What Jaclyn actually did was continue to maintain that her lipsticks are 100% safe to use, in spite of the fact that there have been multiple reports of people having reactions, bumps on their lips, in extreme cases even cutting their lips from whatever plastic or glass is embedded in these little tubes of death. OK that is dramatic, but here is the thing: we ingest lipsticks. Pregnant people are using these. If there is mold or contamination, this could actually cause legitimate health risks.

Many people suspect these lipsticks are old/expired, which isn't such a stretch considering she's been working on this for years. She's had the lipsticks ready to go for years. She's teased these lipsticks on her channel for years and even worn them. Also, there's MOLD. Still, Jaclyn maintains they are safe. She's sticking by the glove story. You know someone else who stuck by a shady glove story? OJ Simpson.

In a statement given to news outlets (this has actually hit major news outlets) Jaclyn Hill maintains that less than 1% of the lipsticks have been compromised (remember I said she loves that statistic?) If Twitter is anything to go by, it's a lot more than 1%. It's more like 99%. People who haven't had any issues with these lipsticks are definitely the minority here. Jaclyn herself has yet to really publicly address this, she's only been making vague statements through her company website or on Twitter. Recently her company updated their website to say "Don't pout, we will be restocking soon." Phew. I would love to add more hairy and potentially contaminated lipsticks to my collection.

It seems that as s far as Jaclyn Hill is concerned, she sold out. She made her money. She doesn't really seem to care that people's health is at risk. My mind is boggled. I'm assuming she thinks this will be like all of her other failed launches. It will blow over, people will forgive her and continue to buy her products. If you take a look at her closet tour, this assumption is not so far off.

However, perhaps this time she has finally gone too far. Touting patchy eye shadows is one thing, but putting people's health at risk is another. Major influencers and long time supporters (including, but not limited to That Girl Shae, Nicol Concilio, Jen Luvs Reviews, Jackie Aina, Babs Beauty, Samantha March and many others)  have had enough. I am still curious as to who she will blame this time. She will definitely blame the lab. Perhaps she will blame a homeless dog who wandered into the lab and shed on all of her lipsticks because you can't be mad at a homeless dog. Maybe the people who broke into Jeffree Star's lab broke into her lab. They didn't steal anything, they just contaminated her lipsticks! From a PR standpoint, I grade her an F. From a makeup standpoint, I grade her an F. From a personal/human standpoint, I grade her an F. It's sad that someone millions of people looked up to and learned from, has turned out to be a scam artist. I believe that once she may have been a good person, but that money, greed and fame have taken over. She lies so much, she may even believe her own lies. I hate to ever bash a person or a brand, but this situation is way too hairy for me (pardon the pun).

PS If you are looking for some great lipsticks, I'd recommend Bite Beauty, Pat McGrath, Charlotte Tilbury, Becca and Colourpop luxe lipsticks (Colourpop is amazing and affordable). They are all creamy, buttery, hair/mold free and all have a great variety of nude shades! An influencer I love and trust named Alisa Ashley posted her favorite nude lipsticks to buy that are NOT Jaclyn Cosmetics. She has great recommendations for all skin tones!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sqzBCd93Qak

Also, while I know I injected this blog with humor, the health risks are not funny. If you purchased these lipsticks, I'd strongly suggest NOT using them until there is solid evidence that they are safe.

Summer 2019 Makeup and Beauty Trends with Tips From Popular Beauty & Lifestyle Guru Adaleta Avdić!

Hi and welcome to another blog. With Memorial Day weekend coming up, it's finally time for pool parties, beach days, BBQ's and summer fun. Although I think LA is late getting the memo because it's been chilly and gloomy here. As a makeup artist/addict, I'm constantly watching YouTube videos and stalking the Instagram pages of my favorite artists.

I recently discovered beauty guru and social media maven, Adaleta Avdić, (known as @adaatude on Instagram so go follow her). I'm definitely going to be incorporating some of her tips and product recommendations because they are awesome.

Trend #1 - Glass Skin/Glowy Skin

It's all about the dew. From glowy moisturizers and primers (I'm obsessed with the Tatcha Dewy Skin Cream and Ole Henrikson's Banana Bright Primer) to wet looking highlights (Kevyn Aucoin's Glass Glow Face Highlighter is life) to dewy setting sprays. My two favorites are the Glow Recipe Watermelon Ultra Fine Mist and the Farsali Rose Gold 24 K Skin Mist.

Adaleta highly recommends the Pixi Beauty Hydrating Milky Mist, which she says is perfect for a quick hydration boost throughout the day. I can definitely attest to the fact that Pixi has amazing skin care and it's affordable!

She also loves to do a spritz of the  Kiehl's Cactus Flower & Tibetan Ginseng Hydrating Mist, which she says smells absolutely incredible. Also, this Kiehl's version comes in a smaller size (2.5 fl oz.) so it's perfect to carry on the go and for those summer travels. I must admit, I haven't tried the Kiehl's, but I've added it to my Sephora Loves List.

Trend #2 - Bright Colors and Neons!

From the Anastasia Riviera Palette, to Fenty Beauty's neon eyeliners, summer is the perfect time to add a fun pop of color, even just on your nails. If you don't want to go all out, try adding a bright color to your lower lash line or inner corner.

Trend #3 - Body Oils/Hydrated Skin

It seems like every brand is jumping on the body oil train and I'm totally on board. My personal favorites are Fenty Body Lava in Trophy Wife and Sol de Janeiro Glow Motions. I've also heard great things about Patrick Ta's Major Glow Body Oil. Rub some on your shoulders and Décolletage for that sexy glow.

If body oil isn't your jam, you can always stick with a great moisturizer. Adaleta loves the Lush Cosmetics Dream Cream. I'm obsessed with pretty much all things Lush, so I'll be running to grab this. You all know I swear by Sol de Janiero's Bum Bum cream. When rocking a bikini or shorts you definitely want soft, hydrated skin!

Trend #4 - Cream Products

I've been loving cream products. They look so natural and who wants to feel super powdery in the hot weather? Not this girl. I'm going to list a few of my absolute faves.

Milk Makeup Matte Bronzer
Nudestix Bloom All Over Dewy Color and/or Nudestix Matte Brush and Bronze
Huda Beauty Tantour Contour and Bronzer Cream
Supergoop Cream Shadow (*Note: This also has SPF for your eyelids. Brilliant)

Trend #5- Blush, Blush, Blush

I love blush and I really love that blush seems to be all the rage. I go all out taking it from the apples of my cheeks all the way up to my hairline and across the nose for that super sun kissed look.

You probably know by now that the Buxom Primer Infused Blushes are my ride or die. They are so pigmented, they last all day and they have this gorgeous sheen to them.

I'm also completely in love with the Natasha Denona Bloom Palette. This stunning quad comes with a cream blush, a cream highlight, a powder blush that is so shimmery it makes my heart sing and a powder highlight. Another great thing about this palette is you can use the cream brush on your lips, the shimmer blush on your eyes and create a beautiful glowy and monochromatic look very quickly and easily. One and done!

I've also been loving the Cover FX monochromatic matte and shimmer blush duos.

Trend #6 - Lip Stains, Lip Glosses and Lip Balms

I don't know about you, but I've been over liquid lipsticks for a while now. Especially in the warmer months, I want my lips to feel hydrated and either look juicy or like I just sucked on a delicious Popsicle.  Fenty Beauty seemed to be on the same page with their poutsicles, which are everything. They feel so nice on the lips, the colors are so fun and they fade into that Popsicle like stain. Blazing Orange is my favorite. A fiery orange lipstick just makes me feel some type of way. While I'm talking about Fenty Beauty, their gloss bombs are my favorite lip glosses ever.

I also love Pat McGrath lip glosses. Pat McGrath can really do wrong, but her lip glosses are so right. Bite Beauty, another one of my favorite brands for lip products, just came out with lip stains and they are also delightful.

When it comes to lip treatments and balms, I swear by Laneige. Their lip sleeping mask stays right by my bed and I put it on every night. The lip glowy balm lives in my purse.

Adaleta recommends The Butterstick Lip Treatment from Kiehl's. It has an SPF 30, color payoff, and a serious boost of hydration to the lips. The La Mer Lip Balm is another amazing alternative, with a luxurious silky feel (so you can kiss confidently, oooh la la!) That is a direct quote from her :) You can never go wrong with La Mer anything.

Trend #7 - Less is More

Whether you're lounging by the pool or running errands in the heat, you don't want to feel heavy or cakey. This is the time to let your natural beauty shine through (having a tan never hurts either).

I love to just slap on a tinted moisturizer, a little bronzer/blush, mascara and lip gloss.

My fave is the YSL All in One Glow, which has an SPF of 23, evens the complexion and gives a natural luminous finish.

Adaleta opts for the Boscia Skin Perfecting BB Cream Broad Spectrum, with an additional SPF 30.  It's a hydrating BB cream that keeps the skin looking fresh while lasting a really long time.

Remember that while it's great to use a foundation with SPF, it's still extremely important to apply sunscreen on your face and body!

When it comes to mascara, no one wants to be having racoon eyes.  Adaleta is loving the Too Faced Better Than Sex Waterproof Mascara, which is perfect for time by the pool, beach or lake this summer.

I am so thrilled that I got tips and product recommendations from Adaleta. I can't wait to check out all of the products she recommended. I've included more about her below because in addition to being a fantastic blogger and Influencer, she also has a really great story. I strongly suggest you check her out!

She was kind enough to provide direct links to the products she loves. I'm lazier, but you can find all of my recommendations at Sephora!

Items To Splurge On At The Sephora VIB Sale Spring 2019 and My Wishlist

Hello my fellow makeup and beauty addicts. It's a magical time. The birds are chirping, the bees are trying to have sex with them (as is my understanding). It's the Sephora VIB Spring Sale, which lasts until May 6th!

While of course the sale is a great time to replenish your ride or dies
Foundations (mine are the Dior Skin Glow for special occasions and YSL All in One Glow for everyday,  in case you were curious),
Concealer (Jouer High Coverage)
Mascara (Hourglass Caution best mascara ever in the land)
Brow Products (Benefit Precisely My Brow and Milk Makeup Kush Fiber Setting Gel)
Powder (Hourglass Veil Translucent and Charlotte Tilbury Airbrushed Flawless)

You can also get some fresh beauty blenders, brush cleaners, the boring stuff that's not exciting but necessary. It's also the time to splurge on those items you've had your eye on, but haven't been able to bring yourself to purchase because they are too expensive or not the most practical. Or both.

Treat yourself, because you deserve it. Yes, I'm talking to you. Below are some fantastic items that you don't necessarily need, but sometimes that is OK. These are in no particular order whatsoever.

1. Charlotte Tilbury Hollywood Flawless Filter

You can wear this under foundation and let your inner glow shine through. You can wear it over your foundation for a gorgeous highlight. Heck, you can do over and under and all around. This is magic in a bottle.

2. Anastasia Beverly Hills Riviera Palette

The sale is the perfect time to grab this palette because let's be honest, it's not necessarily the most practical. That said, the pops of color are so fun for spring/summer. The pink and purple pressed pigments are amaze. The periwinkle and silvery shades are so stunning. You can definitely get a neutral look with the mustard yellow and beautiful bronze shade. I honestly adore this palette. If it's not your cup of tea and you want something more neutral definitely get the Sultry Palette. It's incredible and limited edition so grab it now. Just get both palettes basically.

3. Pat McGrath

I'm just gonna put Mother Pat in her own entire category because her products are some of the absolute best makeup I've ever tried (and as a makeup artist and makeup lover I've tried a TON). Her eyeshadow palettes are everything. Her lip liners (especially the shades contour and done undone) have made me love lip liner. Her lipsticks and lip glosses are also gorgeous. I would highly suggest taking advantage of the VIB sale to experience Pat McGrath. Contour lip liner with her lip gloss in faux real...I can't.

4. Tatcha Silk Canvas Primer

This primer takes away my pores, smooths out my skin and makes my makeup last longer. It's pretty pricey, but you need the teeniest amount so it will last you forever. This also does come in a mini if you want to try it out before investing in the whole enchilada.

5. Drunk Elephant Skincare

Whether it's the baby facial, the oil, the serums or the moisturizer, Drunk Elephant is truly top notch when it comes to skin care.

6. Ole Henrikson Banana Bright Eye Creme and Primer

If you have been searching for an eye cream to brighten, reduce the look of dark circles and hydrate your under eyes look no further - this is it. I also really enjoy their new banana bright primer.

7. Milk Makeup Cream Bronzer

I have been really loving cream products, especially in the summer months. This bronzer blends so easily and flawlessly, Baked is the perfect shade for me, it gives you that natural and perfect bronze.

8. Laneige Lip Mask

This lip mask has changed my life and it has also changed the lives of everyone I've recommended it to. If you suffer from dry and chapped lips, put this on every night before bed and your lips will wake up feeling happy and hydrated.

9. Marc Jacobs Steel-etto Palette

This is the perfect cool toned eyeshadow palette and I love me a good cool toned eyeshadow palette. You can create the perfect smokey eye, but you can definitely create more subtle daytime looks as well. The shadows blend like a dream and I just love it.

10. Marc Jacobs Enamored Hydrating Lip Gloss Stick

That is a mouthful. Speaking of Marc Jacobs, these lip products are so nice. They give you that glossy/balmy look while still having the pigment of a lipstick.

11. Fenty Stunna Lip Paints and Gloss Bombs

These might be my favorite lip products. The stunna lip paints are long lasting like a liquid lipstick, but they don't dry down completely and do transfer a bit, which is probably why they are so comfortable. So if you love your lipstick to last long, but hate the feel of traditional liquid lipsticks I think you will love these. She also came out with some super fun and bright colors for spring. The gloss bombs are just so juicy and beautiful. Fussy is probably my fave, but diamond milk is so special and fun.

12. Buxom Wanderlust Primer Infused Blushes

These are truly are the best blushes I've ever tried. Seychelles is my favorite shade. They are very pigmented so go in with a light hand, but these will last all day! They also give this slight sheen/glow to the skin, which is soooo pretty. I'm obsessed and you need one.

13. Hourglass

This is another luxury brand where I love so many of their products that it's hard to narrow down. As you saw above, the hourglass caution mascara is perfection. It lengthens, adds volume, lasts all day and does not transfer, which is my favorite part. No more little black dots under my eyes. I also really adore the hourglass powders. From their blushes and bronzers to their finishing powders, they are just gorgeous. The scattered lights eyeshadows are really stunning as well. Just take your finger, place them on the lid and you will get tons of compliments.

14. Natasha Denona Super Glow Highlight

This is my favorite highlight ever in the world. It gives that wet/glass like look. You can definitely build it up to be fairly blinding if you desire, but it will never look chunky or glittery and I don't want no chunks or glitter.

15. Sol De Janiero

You all know I am obsessed with the bum bum cream, but I may be even more obsessed with their coco cabana cream. It smells so amazing you will just want to lather yourself in it. Your skin will feel so soft. I also love their fragrances, their body wash. Basically if you like soft skin and smelling like heaven, you will love this brand.

Mini Items To Throw In Your Cart Last Minute

We've all done this. You're standing in line and you see this cute little mini and you're like ok little fella you're coming with me.

The Natasha Denona Mini Nude Palette

This little palette is such a gem. I reach it for it so much. The two matte brown shades are perfect and the shimmer shades are gorgeous. At only $25 (plus sale discount) you get to try Natasha Denona's formula and have an incredible little all in one palette.

The Viseart Petite Pro Palette

Viseart is another eyeshadow brand that is super expensive, but their two latest mini gems are magical. I picked up apricotine and I think it's the perfect peachy little palette.

Pat Mcgrath Mini Gloss Trios

This is the perfect way to try Pat's glosses. Honestly, they are a decent size so will definitely last a while. Dooo it.

Kaja Eyeshadow Trios

Are these not the cutest things you've ever seen? They are also absolutely beautiful on the eyes.

My Wish List

I definitely will not be purchasing all of these items. In fact, I will most likely only treat myself to one thing because...money. But a girl can dream...

1. The Tatcha Dewy Skin Cream

I've heard this gives you the most dewy glow, is super hydrating (my skin is dry AF) and lays really well under makeup. It's $68 however wahhh,

2. The Farsali Rose Gold 24K Skin Mist

I love me a dewy setting spray. Do I need to drench my face in a $38 spray that contains flecks of real gold? Perhaps not, but it would make me really happy to do so.

3. Natasha Denona Bloom Blush & Glow Palette

This comes with a cream blush, a cream highlight, a powder blush and a powder highlight. Pretty much all of my favorite influencers have been raving about the flushed cheek and gorgeous glow that this palette gives you. Me likey.

4. Fenty Beauty Body Lava in Trophy Wife

Another super practical thing. I mean we all clearly need to drench our bodies in shimmering body liquid, am i right?

5. Charlotte Tilbury Luxury Eyeshadow Palette in Pillowtalk

First of all, I need another eyeshadow palette like a hole in the head. Secondly, I'm sure I own these shades in my collection. But Charlotte's iconic Pillowtalk lipstick is one of my absolute favorites and this palette is so pretty.Of course it's been sold out the entire sale, which makes me want it even more.

6. Fenty Beauty Setting Powder in Lavender

I had the amazing opportunity to work with one of Fenty Beauty's main makeup artist. She is the most gorgeous and talented person and my woman crush wednesday. She said I need this powder. It claims to brighten the under eyes, which I love me a brightened undereye. It's also supposed to blur, smooth and obviously set. My beautiful makeup artist friend also told me I need the stunna lip paints in the hot pink and coral shades so those are on my loves list as well.

7. Benefit Cosmetics Cheekleaders Mini Cheek Parade Palette

This little palette comes with Benefit's Hula bronzer, which is a classic and fantastic bronzer, their blush in gold rush, which looks delightful but the highlight though. One of my favorite influencers Mel Thompson has raved about this highlight, which is called Cookie. Jaclyn Hill is obsessed too.  It's cookie time, cookie time!

8. Becca Ultimate Lipstick Love in Sugar

All of this talk of cookies and sugar is making me hungry. I probably have 20 nude lipsticks, but can you ever really have too many lip products? Both Samantha Ravndahl, who is my beauty influencer hero and I basically love everything she loves and Mel Thompson have spoken very highly of both the color and the formula.

9. Bite Beauty Outburst Longwear Lipstick Stain

I love lip stains and I love Bite Beauty lip products. I haven't heard any reviews on this product yet so I would definitely want to see how it performs and what my fave guru's have to say about it, but I'm intrigued.

10. Cover FX Blush and Bronzer Duo's

I mean just look at this. It looks like it will make my cheeks sing.

What have you bought? What's on your wish list?
