Makeup I thought I'd Like But...Do Not

 Anastasia Beverly Hills Subculture Palette

People seemed to either love or hate it. Unfortunately, I'm the latter. Typically, before I purchase new makeup I will check out reviews and tutorials from my most trusted influencers. In this case, I just went ahead and ordered because I love Anastasia palettes. The Modern Renaissance is a ride or die, I also really love the Self Made palette, which I felt was highly underrated. I really enjoy all of their single shadows in my collection as well. So I had no doubt that the quality would be great and those colors! The colors are so gorgeous and it was such a breath of fresh air after so many warm palettes. It was such a highly anticipated palette, the "sister of the Modern Renaissance" and I knew it would sell out quickly. Not only did I jump on that train, I bought a couple as gifts.

Then the reviews started coming in. Fall out and kick up is never a deal breaker for me, I really don't mind, but this looked pretty extreme. Also, it was a new formula that was highly pigmented, but very hard to blend out, patchy, people were not enjoying it. I still wanted to see for myself and though it was dubbed "not a beginners palette," I'm a certified makeup artist and figured I could make it work.

Narrator: It did not work.

The fallout wasn't too bad, but the blendability was horriffic. Some of the shadows oxidized in my crease and turned this really weird grey color. The colors did not play nicely with each other. The shimmer shades were really disappointing, i could not get the color payoff I wanted no matter what I did. I've seen people create absolutely beautiful looks with this palette and there are a few shades in the palette that I do like on their own, combined with other palettes that blend and do not oxidize. I would not recommend.

Tarte Rainforest of the Sea Foundation

I thought I was really going to love this foundation. It had gotten pretty good reviews and seemed to have everything I want in a foundation. My skin is pretty dry and this was water based, but had good coverage. I once got sun poisoning in Mexico and it has spf, which I love because I need to be really careful with my skin. I don't HATE this foundation, but I definitely don't really like it. For some reason it actually enhanced my dry patches and it would break up on me after a few hours. I'm also not a big fan of the dropper applicator, though I could totally overlook that if I loved the foundation. Compared to my holy grails (Dior Forever, Too Faced Born this Way and Hourglass Vanish Stick), this one did not even come close.

Morphe Eyeshadow Palettes

Everyone was raving about Morphe (and pushing their codes) so I gave in and got the Morphe 35O Shimmer palette, because I'd heard the shimmers were better than the mattes and I have plenty of warm mattes in my collection. The shimmers did not shimmer. They barely showed up. They didn't show up with my finger. They didn't show up with a brush. They didn't show up when I was in a rush. A little poetry for ya. I gave that palette to a friend. Then Morphe came out with those two square palettes that sold out really quickly and Jaclyn Hill and Nikkietutorials were raving about them. I  can't even remember what they were called. I always want what I can't have so as soon as the palettes came back in stock, I grabbed one. Big mistake. Huge. Once again, i was getting no color payoff whatsoever, the shadows were so dry. I gave that palette away. Quite honestly, I never planned to ever purchase another Morphe eyeshadow palette again, but then Jaclyn Hill came out with her palette and I had to have it. I have to say that I really do love that palette, it's definitely much softer, creamier and pigmented than the others. The shimmers actually shimmer, the mattes blend out really easily. So I'm still a little hesitant when it comes to the shadows (I do enjoy a lot of the brushes), but it does seem like they've really upped their game. We shall see.

The Urban Decay All Nighter Concealer

I've been on the hunt for something to replace my beloved Tarte Shape tape concealer. I'm kind of mad at Tarte right now for the horrific limited shade range they put out for the Tarte Shape Foundation. It's actually appalling and even more appalling is how they handled the fallout from excluding a huge group of people. Both Kathleen Lights and Babs Beauty really liked the concealer so I figured I'd give it a try. I do love the urban decay naked weightless concealer on days when i want lighter coverage, but if I'm being honest most days I like FULL coverage. This concealer made my undereyes look so dry and cakey. And I really moisturize and prime my skin and under eyes so I gave it a few tries using different hydrating products that have never failed me. So needless to say, I do not enjoy this concealer and now just use it to my cut crease.

Physicians Formula Butter Bronzer

This is such a cult favorite and I really thought I was going to love it. One of my biggest makeup pet peeves is muddy bronzer and this seemed like it would go on really smooth (buttery if you will). And I guess it did, but I really had to dig in there to get any type of color pay off. I'm pretty fair so I like for a bronzer to actually bronze me and this one did not. I also do not like the Makeup Forever bronzer that feels very similar so I guess I just don't like soft textured bronzers. Fortunately, I found the hour glass ambient lighting bronzer and it's changed my life. This bronzer does smell delightful though, I'll give it that.

Too Faced Just Peachy Mattes Palette

I'm really not a fan of Too Faced eyeshadows. I think they are dry and patchy and they don't wear well on my eyes. With so many amazing affordable eyeshadow options like colourpop and makeup geek, it seems silly to purchase any Too Faced Palettes in spite of the adorable packaging. Their packaging is always adorable. The only Too Faced Palette I enjoy is the Sweet Peach palette, but I will admit that i use it as a supplementary palette and often use another palette to help me blend, build up pigment and either a base of topper for the shimmer shades on the lid. It's a lot of work and probably not worth it, but I have it so I do it. When I saw the Peaches & Cream palette, the colors just called my name. I thought I could use it with the Sweet Peach palette and they'd be a match made in heaven. Sadly, that did not happen. Like so many Too Faced Palettes before her, the Just Peachy Mattes palette was dry, some shades were patchy and it did not wear well. I gave this palette to a friend and quite honestly will probably never purchase another Too Faced eyeshadow palette.

What makeup products did you want to love, but just didn't?

New February Makeup Releases I Want

Have I mentioned that new makeup is being released every single minute? For a makeup addict like myself, this is highly dangerous. Here is what is on my wish list this week.

Dose of Colors Lip Glosses

I love Dose of Colors and these glosses look sooo pretty. I watched Atleeeey swatch them all and I'm like I'll take 3 please. I linked her video below so you can check out all the colors and pick your faves. Mine (in case you're curious) are Honey I'm Home, Save the Date and Jazzy.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nPK5cP3riBc

Makeup Forever Star Lit Glitter Palette
This is exactly what I need. Another eyeshadow. That's all glitter. It's actually the last thing I need, but so pretty. I love their star lit powders so a palette of pressed shadows is very intriguing to this glitter loving gal.

Milk Makeup Luminous Blur Stick

I heard mixed reviews about the original blur stick, but have always been curious to see if it would blur my fine lines and pours. My skin is super dry and now that they've come out with a luminous version I feel like I owe it to my 36 year old skin to try.

Tarte Color Splash Shade Shifting Rainforest of the Sea Lipstick

Try saying that 5 times. I've heard such great things about tarte's rainforest of the sea lipstick formula and these have glitter. Can you tell I like glitter?

Ole Henrikson Facial Sauna Scrub

One of my favorite influencers, Samantha March, has been raving about this on her channel. She says it actually makes your shower feel like a spa. I'm all about that life. Samantha's channel is below.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kr7FtLHz9so&t=175s

Colourpop Moonlight Magic Collection

Jkissa (my all time fave beauty guru) just did a full review of this collection and loved it. As you know, I'm obsessed with Colourpop and especially their supernova shadows. Lately, I've been loving a more cool toned taupe eye so Now or Never is screaming my name. Lucky Penny looks super pretty as well. I think these new shades are very unique and a breath of fresh air in a sea of warm tones. I'll link Jkissa's video below

My Favorite YouTube Beauty Influencers & Why I Love Them

It's crazy for me to think about a time when I wasn't addicted to Youtube makeup tutorials. Although I've learned quite a lot, arguably more than I learned a makeup school, beauty influencers can definitely make you feel like you need 10 foundations, 20 eyeshadow palettes, 50 lip products (matte, liquid, satin, gloss, etc). There is a ridiculous amount of new makeup launching and all it takes is for your fave influencer to rave about it and create a beautiful look for you to put it in your cart or at least add to your loves list.

For me, it started by just looking up something like "Pink Valentines Day Makeup Tutorial." Then it got more specific like "Anastasia Modern Renaissance Tutorial." While I am trained in my techniques and can blend like a boss, I'm not an innate artist. I can create the obvious color combination, but I definitely turn to actual artists for inspiration.

For me to love and subscribe to a channel I have a few requirements. I need to love and be inspired by the artistry. I need to connect with the influencer and like what they are about and how they choose to use their influence. This is going to be in no particular order except I'm going to get the huge obvious ones out of the way and leave my all time favorite for number 1.

10. Nikkietutorials

There was a time when it seemed like she was constantly pushing her codes and only promoting products she could make money off of. That said, I feel like she's really chilled with that and gone back to just a love of makeup. I truly love all of the looks that she creates and I really enjoy her sense of humor. I also think she's a class act, anytime drama has surrounded her I've never seen her badmouth anyone or go on any snap chat rants. If you're looking for natural looks, she probably isn't your girl. But if you're looking for full glam, full coverage, cut creases, blinding highlights, glitter and fun then you will really enjoy her channel.

Below are a couple of my fave videos from Nikkie:

Had to include her iconic "The Power of Makeup" Video
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a4Ov8qvZ2_w

Perrie Edwards Inspired Video
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZF-6OUNjoug

9. Jaclyn Hill

She's another one that I kinda want to hate, but I can't because her tutorials are just so good. She seems like a sweet person, I just take her recommendations with a grain of salt and basically ignore anything she recommends that is insanely expensive or has the word Morphe in it. With the exception of her Morphe palette, which I love. She gives really in depth tutorials and the truth is that I've really learned a lot from her. She's also never steered me wrong in terms of recommendations for foundations, concealers, powders and highlights. Love Jaclyn or hate her, it's hard to deny that she creates really gorgeous makeup looks.

This video has literally changed the way I do my face makeup and I'm obsessed

This is pretty much the hot fire look I think of when I think of Jaclyn Hill. It's perfection

8. Brianna Fox

Brianna is super chill, she feels like someone you totally know and are friends with IRL. I love every single look she creates and she gives so many helpful tips and tricks. I especially love her Favorites videos because I have honestly loved 99% of everything I've purchased based off of her recommendations. She does very natural looks and also very glam looks. I think you'll like her!

7. Babs Beauty

Babs Beauty (Stephanie) looks like a barbie. I literally want to create every single look that she does because they are all so beautiful and I want to look like her. She loves baby pinks and purples, but she also can whip out a vampy look that is somehow still really glam and gorgeous.

6. Raw Beauty Kristi

I don't know Kristi, but I feel like I do. In my mind we are besties who say witty things to each other while doing our makeup. She's so real (raw if you will) and funny and I enjoy her so much. She also creates really beautiful and fun makeup looks. She's honest AF so I trust everything she says, which is kind of rare in Youtube these days. I highly recommend her channel.

5. That Girl Shae Xo

I just love Shae. I love that she calls her subscribers "fam." I love all of her live swatch Colourpop tutorials where she will literally try every single shade on her eye. There's something very nurturing about her, but also something very blunt and real about her. I really enjoy her makeup looks, her stories, her throwback Thursday looks using old palettes. I want to take her to lunch.

4. Samantha March

I'm going to be honest, it took me a little while to subscribe to Samantha's channel. I'm typically drawn to makeup artists and channels that are tutorial based. Samantha's is more beauty content though she is delving more into tutorials, which is fun to see. Perhaps it's because we share the same name, we are both published authors and we both absolutely love makeup, but something kept drawing me back to her channel. I love her "Will I Buy It" series where every week she talks about new makeup releases and shares her thought process in determining whether or not she will be purchasing each item. It's really helpful! I love her makeup monthly's because not only does she recommend makeup, she also recommends books. I love books. I've read a few of her suggestions and really enjoyed them. So even though she is not a makeup artist, I really relate to her. I've watched her channel grow and even as it has and she's gained more subscribers and more PR packages, she's stayed the same and she's still brutally honest with her opinions. She responds to pretty much every comment and you can tell she really cares about her subscribers. I just like her.

3. Nicole Renee Cutler

I think what made me looove Nicole Renee Cutler is her love of animals and rescuing them. Often on her channel, she will feature a dog who needs rescuing. She started a site https://baileysmission.com/ dedicated to helping animals find homes. The stuff is so cute and the cause is so close to my heart. I love that Nicole Renee uses her influence to help this cause and of course, I love her makeup looks! She uses both high end and drug store makeup, she incorporates pops of color, but all of her looks are totally wearable. I love when she does her flashback Friday series or creates multiple looks with one palette. I definitely think you should check her out as well as Bailey's Mission!

2. It's Likely Makeup

I have a girl crush on Jordi, I just think she is the prettiest. She is definitely an artist and can literally transform herself into Megan Fox or a scary clown. She uses wigs and fun jewelry. Some of her looks are a bit to avant garde for me, but she also creates many looks that are wearable or can be toned down easily. She's cruelty free, which I always admire in a beauty guru and has introduced me to some really fun indie brands such as furless cosmetics and mabel and meg. She's a mom and her adorable kids sometimes make appearances in her videos. If you are looking to be inspired and have fun with makeup, I'd definitely suggest checking out Jordi.

Purple Halo
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FfFvSqgGiDg

Ok before I get to my allll time favorite Youtuber/Beauty Guru/Influencer Ever, I do have a few honorable mentions. Although they may not be in my absolute top favorite, I do really enjoy their channels and would recommend checking them out if you love makeup.

Samantha Ravndahl
She's pretty, funny and brutally honest. She also does great makeup.
https://www.youtube.com/user/BatALashBeauty

Jazzi Filipek
*Note: I have very dry skin so I often relate to makeup artists who use hydrating primers, foundations, powders, etc. Jazzi's skin is very oily, so while I love her eye looks, face products are hard. BUT if you have oily or combo skin, you should definitely check her out. She gives so many great suggestions and does foundation wear tests.

1. Jkissa

I am probably going to scare her if she ever reads this, but I love Jkissa. I have never met her, she has on occasion responded to Twitter questions or comments from me and that literally makes my life. I feel like Hugh Grant's creepy sister in Notting Hill where I'm like I feel like if only she knew me, we could be best friends.

First of all, she rescued an adorable pittbull and is cruelty free. I really respect big influencers who make that decision because it does limit you in terms of how much money you can make, products you can review, etc. She also doesn't wear foundation because it makes her skin itch and she's not going to conform and put it on even for the sake of a video. She is who she is and she's awesome. She also is unfair looking and doesn't need foundation and can pull of any hair or lip color.

Jkissa has inspired me so much to play with color, to play with placement of eyeshadow, to try dark lips, green lips and just venture out of my comfort zone. I used to constantly wonder how she came up with such awesome color combinations that I would never even think of and then as if answering my prayers, she came up with a color series teaching subscribers about the color wheel and her thought process when pairing colors. She is one of the few beauty influencer's who opinion I trust 100%. Being upfront and honest with her subscribers is her number one priority and it shows. I know that she truly loves every product she recommends and she's not afraid to say when something doesn't work for her.

I love her style, I love her artistry, I love how real she is and I love how she stays so true to herself. For all of these reasons, she is my number 1 favorite beauty Youtuber and I strongly suggest subscribing to her channel if you aren't already. You will learn so much about makeup and will probably want to be her best friend too.

Makeup Wish List

I wish you could register for makeup. That way people would know what to get you for your birthday, the holidays or just no reason at all except to say I love you. Hint hint: anyone who loves me can feel free to buy me any of these at anytime. Being that I'm 36 and single, I may take a cue from Carrie Bradshaw when she decided to get married to herself and register at Manolo Bhahnik.

I have a TON of makeup. I probably don't need anymore. OK i definitely probably don't need anymore. Who needs 20 eyeshadow palettes? MEEEE I do, I really do. Just kidding, I don't need. I just want. I'll stop rambling now and just make my wish list.

Eyeshadow Palettes

The Latte Palette from Christen Dominique
I like her Youtube channel and although these colors aren't the most unique, this palette looks pretty and I WANT IT.

https://dominiquecosmetics.com/products/latte-palette

Nabla Cosmetics Dreamy Palette
This palette is out of stock, which is so annoying because I want it NOW. I hope it comes back really soon and that someone buys it for me.
https://www.nablacosmetics.com/en/eye-palettes/892-dreamy-eyeshadow-palette.html

Natasha Denona Star Palette
Since this is my wish list, I can wish for ridiculous things. Like a $169 eyeshadow palette. That's not ridiculous or anything. Natasha Denona shadows are just soooo good.
https://www.sephora.com/product/star-eyeshadow-palette-P413523

Huda Beauty Obsessions Palettes
I'll take 2 please. The mauve one and the smokey obsessions

Viseart
I've heard these are pretty much the best matte shadows ever so yes please

Tarte Maneater Palette
I think this looks so cute. And I'm a maneater so it's fitting
http://tartecosmetics.com/en_US/makeup/maneater-eyeshadow-palette-vol.-2/1119.html?cgid=makeup&dwvar_1119_color=multi

Too Faced Chocolate Bar and Chocolate Gold Palette
Honestly, I'm really not a fan of too faced eyeshadow palettes. I find them to be dry and patchy, they don't blend well or last long on my eyes. I've tried the peachy mattes, the nikkietutorials collab, the natural matte and the only one I like is the Sweet Peach Palette. That said, I still need to use supplementary shadows for that palette to help it blend, but the colors are so pretty so I deal. Still, I've heard really good things about both of these palettes. And they look like chocolate and smell like chocolate and I like chocolate. I like chocolate a LOT.

https://www.sephora.com/product/chocolate-gold-eyeshadow-palette-P426848

While I'm on eyes there are a few shades I still want in the stila liquid shadows so I'll just go ahead and list them. Freedom, Grace, Boheme, Cloud, Carefree. Basically I'm not going to rest until I have like all of them.

https://www.sephora.com/product/shimmer-glow-liquid-eye-shadow-P427385?skuId=2046324&icid2=products%20grid:p427385

I'd also like a couple more of the Natasha Denona Crystal toppers. I'd like the lavender, nude and mauve/purple.

https://www.sephora.com/product/duo-chrome-top-coat-P428678?skuId=2034866&icid2=products%20grid:p428678

Blush

I have plenty of blushes as well, but you know what they say...you can never have too many blushes. Actually, I don't think anyone has ever said that, but I just did!

Jouer Blush Bouquet in Adore
How pretty is this?? I need this. This is the top blush I would like.

What's on your makeup wish list? I really want to know! Perhaps I will even add to mine. shhh

Cozy Sweater Weather Fun

Obviously this post is not about makeup, but if there's one thing I collect nearly as much as makeup...it's sweaters!! I wanted to share my favorite, cutest, most coziest sweaters ever. Because it's winter (although currently 80 degrees in LA) and who doesn't love a great sweater?

Express

Express has been killing it for me lately. I literally love all of their stuff. Do not ever buy anything at full price because they are constantly having incredible sales. Below are my fave sweaters from Express.

 Cable Knit Chenille
I love anything chenille so between that, the fun colors and the balloon sleeves this sweater is pretty much perfection

Fun Makeup Wants (Not Needs)

So this post isn't my ride or die's and it's not necessarily the best value by any means. These are just makeup products that I really love and thought you might like too. As my dad always says there are needs and there are wants. These are all definitely wants!

Eyeshadow Palettes

Dose of Colors 5 Pan Matte Shadow Palettes
These come in sassy siennas, marvelous mauves, baked browns and blushing berries. The formula is incredible and they make it so easy to create a look. Depending on your color preferences, you really can't go wrong with any of these!

Coloured Raine

The Queen of Hearts is their iconic palette and is almost always sold out, though you can pre-order right now. They also have lots of fun mini palettes and the quality of these eyeshadows is fantastic. The mini palettes are limited edition so I'd hop on that train sooner rather than later.

I love Natasha Denona shadows sooo much. They are stupid expensive, but they are so creamy and beautiful. If you don't want to pay a month's rent on one of her large palettes, might I suggest one of the 5 pans. Such a great way to dip your feet in. My faves are below

Morphe
To be honest, I didn't really like Morphe's eyeshadows at all until the Jacyln Hill palette came out and they were pressed differently/reformulated. Now I'm a fan. I have always been a fan of their brushes however. The eyeshadow palettes give you so many colors for such a reasonable price and the brushes are pretty good. Below are a few of my faves.
